The second academic conference of the China Chapter of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association was held in Wuhan from October 14 to 17, 2006. This conference invited famous domestic and foreign hepatobiliary surgery experts Qiu Fazu, Wu Mengchao, Huang Zhiqiang, and Academician Tang Zhaoyou, as well as Professor Markus W Büchler, President of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association, Academician Liu Yunyi and Professor Henry A. Pitt, the former two presidents of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association, and International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association. Professor Jacques Belghiti, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Pancreatic Association, Professor Christoph E. Broelsch, Chairman of the European Branch of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Society, and many other foreign scholars attended the conference and gave wonderful speeches. More than 1,000 representatives attended this conference, including 9 academicians of the two academies and 2 foreign academicians. A total of more than 550 papers were received. Under the chairmanship of the conference chairman, Professor Chen Xiaoping, everyone held a number of symposiums focusing on the cutting-edge, hot and difficult issues in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at home and abroad, through speeches at the conference, special discussions, free submission of paper reports and other forms. The surgical, internal medicine, interventional, endoscopic, pathology, imaging, ultrasound treatment, basic research of pancreatic diseases, as well as the subject management, scientific research and medical teaching in the field of surgery were effectively discussed. During the meeting, gold medals were awarded to Academician Liu Yunyi and Professor Peng Shuyi for their outstanding contributions to hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in China.
