Chen Xiaoping, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, expert in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery

In the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, he has made systematic and innovative achievements: proposed a new classification of hepatocellular carcinoma and the theory that large hepatocellular carcinoma can be safely resected; established three techniques for controlling bleeding in hepatic resection and one liver transplantation; proposed the concept of small-scope hepatic resection to treat hilar cholangiocarcinoma; established biliary-intestinal anastomosis and insertion-type biliary-intestinal anastomosis without suturing of the anterior bile duct wall; improved the operation procedure of pancreaticoduodenectomy and created Chen’s pancreatic-intestinal suture technique. He also improved the operation steps of pancreaticoduodenectomy and created Chen’s pancreatic-intestinal suture technique.

He was awarded the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award nominated by the Ministry of Education, the first prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Award for Scientific and Technological Progress, the first prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Anti-cancer Association, the Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery in China, and the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award. He has been honored as National Master Teacher, National Advanced Individual of Health Units, Ministry of Health Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions, National May 1st Labor Medal, and National Pioneer of Medical Ethics, and was awarded the Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement by Asia-Pacific Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association in 2017, and was awarded the title of National “Most Beautiful Science and Technology Worker” in 2019, and National Innovation and Advancement Medal in 2020. He will be awarded the National Medal for Innovation and Pioneering in 2020. Prof. Renzo, Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (UK), published an op-ed in Nature, calling Chen Xiaoping “a leader in the improvement and innovation of international hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgical technology”.

He has served as President of the Asia Pacific Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association (APHPA), and is currently Chairman of the Asia Pacific Expert Committee for the Promotion and Development of Laparoscopic Hepatectomy, and Chairman of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association (IHPA), China Chapter. He is Honorary Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons, Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons, Member of the International Surgical Group (ISG) (only 1 in China), Standing Committee Member of the Surgical Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and Chairman of the Hepatology Section, Vice President of the Surgical Branch of the Chinese Physicians’ Association, Vice President of the Organ Transplantation Branch, Chairman of the Luminal Laparoscopy and Robotics Section of the Chinese Anti-cancer Association, and President of the Wuhan Medical Association.
